Are you looking for a unique holiday tradition to start with your family? Well, today, I’m going to share with you one of our favorite traditions. It started about 10 years ago with just a few handmade snowflakes. After we had cut out our snowflakes, my husband wanted to hang them from the ceiling. Each year, we make more snowflakes to add to our collection.
This tradition keeps bringing our family back together year after year. I pray that as my children grow up and leave our home, they’ll come back each year to continue on this tradition, and maybe even start it with their own families.
This year we will reach 1,000 snowflakes!
This tradition is obviously not for those who don’t like putting effort into decorating. It’s a lot of hard work! To make it a little easier, we leave fishing line up year round. People may think we’re crazy, but that is the toughest part of this tradition. My husband uses fishing line and command hooks, connecting the string from one end of the room to the other. We use silver ornament hooks to hang them. You want to make sure to bend the hooks well, so they don’t easily come off of the fishing line.
Since my husband has been doing this for 10 years, he’s learned a lot of little tricks to keep the lines from collapsing from the weight of the snowflakes. Here’s how he suggests doing it:
- Tie one end of the line to a hook.
- Go across the room and run the string through the one directly across from it.
- Go to the hook next to it, and take the string through that hook.
- Come back to the previous hook, and tie it off.
This method puts a stronger force on the non-tied ends, so if one connection fails, 3 others hold it in place.
We have searched and searched, and Amazon has the best pricing that we can find. If you order soon, you can get free shipping, even if you’re not a Prime member. Here are the two products you will need (besides paper, scissors, and ornament hooks to hang them with).
If you want to get really crafty with your snowflakes, you can use tools like special hole punchers, or crafty scissors. We love to use scissors like these to make unique designs:
It’s been really neat to watch the kid’s snowflake-making skills increase over the years. They go from barely being able to cut out a circle, to creating really amazing designs. We also sometimes use colored or patterned paper, or make them stand out with glitter glue, paint, crayons, and markers.
A FINAL TIP
Very lightly write the initial of the one who created the snowflake, along with the year that it was made. This will become a treasure chest of memories for years to come!
