How You Can Discern The Voice of the Lord
God wants to take you to a new level!
There are desires and dreams that you’ve shoved to the back of your brain. God says that it’s time to dig them up! You’ve been stagnant for far too long. If you don’t start watering these gifts within you, they will dry up and die.
But, if you will just begin to step out in faith, and learn to discern God’s voice, miracles will happen. When we are faced with trials in our lives, it’s so much easier to make it through to the other side, if we’re so in tune with God, that we don’t have to stop and doubt if it’s Him that we hear, or if it’s something we’ve made up on our own.
How can you discern the voice of the Lord from your own mind?
The number one thing you can do is pretty obvious, or at least I hope it is.
Stay in the Word!
Don’t just read the verse of the day on the Bible app, and expect that to be enough. That’s a good place to start if you’re not used to reading the Bible each day, but it’s not enough to take you to a deeper level of understanding and wisdom, and to truly be able to discern the voice of the Lord.
For some, it may be good to research certain topics of interests and then look up verses on those subjects. Others may find it best to set a goal to read through the entire Bible. I’m still trying to work my way through it all. It has taken me years, because I study it as I go, not just merely read the words without thinking about it. I plan to finish by this July. If you’re new to the Bible, I highly suggest starting in the New Testament. Learn about Jesus! You will be moved in ways you never thought possible, when you study His life.
Psalm 1:3 is talking about the person who meditates on His Word,
“He shall be like a tree
Planted by the rivers of water,
That brings forth its fruit in its season,
Whose leaf also shall not wither;
And whatever he does shall prosper.”
Seek Him first!
This is something we are all so guilty of, especially women. Who do you turn to when you’re trying to figure things out? You want to bounce ideas around and see what other people think. You know what? All that matters is what God says! So don’t be surprised when you feel like you can’t discern the voice of the Lord, when you first turn to your mom, sister, friend, or anyone else. Perhaps you are drowning out His voice by relying on what other people tell you.
We are supposed to go to Him first! Why wouldn’t you? He knows far more than anyone else, and He holds all of the answers. When you go to other people with your problems, before going to the Lord, you are essentially making those people your authority instead of the Lord Almighty.
Matthew 6:33 is one of my favorite Bible verses to keep me in tune with God’s will for my life. “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”
This goes right along with seeking Him first. How do you do that? With prayer of course. Prayer is your line of communication with your Heavenly Father. If you feel like you aren’t getting a clear answer from Him, just stay in His Word, and keep seeking Him. Ask Him for clarity. God is not the author of confusion, that is the enemy’s job. Satan is out to destroy you. He’ll stop at nothing to distract you from living out the great life that God wants you to have. Stand firm and keep praying until your breakthrough happens!
Constant Conviction and Confirmation
Those desires that you have in your heart to do great things with your life, were planted there by God Himself. And because of that, He’s not going to let you forget about it, especially if you are following the previous steps that I mentioned. Little reminders will pop up here and there. And once you make a decision to step out in faith and start doing what He has called you to do, you’ll have one confirmation after another.
You will have peace!
This doesn’t mean that you won’t have any worries, or that you won’t doubt your decision. Those things are human nature. But, you will have this peace deep down inside of you. Even when your decisions don’t make sense in the natural, you’ll have this peace and just know that it is the Lord directing your steps.
Philippians 4:7, “and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
I would love to hear what God is doing in your life. What is something that He told you to do, and you just knew it was Him speaking to you? How did you discern the voice of the Lord from your own mind? Let me know in the comments!
