Is God trying to get your attention?

I’ve been reading through the Old Testament, and I’m currently in the book of Amos. As I read chapter 4:6-13, my heart sank. It talks about all the things that the Lord did in attempts to bring His people back to Him. This included famine, drought, insects and mildew, plague, war, and some unidentified divine intervention.

It reads:

Israel Did Not Accept Correction

“Also I gave you cleanness of teeth in all your cities,
And lack of bread in all your places;
Yet you have not returned to Me,”
Says the Lord.

“I also withheld rain from you,
When there were still three months to the harvest.
I made it rain on one city,
I withheld rain from another city.
One part was rained upon,
And where it did not rain the part withered.
So two or three cities wandered to another city to drink water,
But they were not satisfied;
Yet you have not returned to Me,”
Says the Lord.

“I blasted you with blight and mildew.
When your gardens increased,
Your vineyards,
Your fig trees,
And your olive trees,
The locust devoured them;
Yet you have not returned to Me,”
Says the Lord.

10 “I sent among you a plague after the manner of Egypt;
Your young men I killed with a sword,
Along with your captive horses;
I made the stench of your camps come up into your nostrils;
Yet you have not returned to Me,”
Says the Lord.

11 “I overthrew some of you,
As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah,
And you were like a firebrand plucked from the burning;
Yet you have not returned to Me,”
Says the Lord.

12 “Therefore thus will I do to you, O Israel;
Because I will do this to you,
Prepare to meet your God, O Israel!”

13 For behold,
He who forms mountains,
And creates the wind,
Who declares to man what his thought is,
And makes the morning darkness,
Who treads the high places of the earth—
The Lord God of hosts is His name.

The reason my heart sank when I read this is because I imagine how many more attempts God has made over the years, to return His people’s hearts to Him.

How many natural disasters were really God’s way of trying to get people to repent and turn back to Him? All of the violence in the world; could it have been ordained by God to cause His children to cry out to Him again? If you don’t think that God orders destruction, then you need to go back to your Bible and read it again. As I’ve been reading through the Old Testament, there are so many wars that God Himself commanded to happen, and of all of them that come to my mind, they were ordered because His people disobeyed Him.

What saddens me the most is thinking of my own family drowning in darkness.

I cry out on their behalf so often, asking God to break their chains of addictions. I ask Him to erase their past so they can move forward. My prayer has gotten so intense lately because I’m just desperate for their salvation and deliverance. I pray, “God, do whatever it takes to save them!” For YEARS I’ve been praying for them, and every now and then, I think, “This is it! Look at the change happening. Yes! Thank You Jesus.” But it never seems to last, or become that complete transformation that I know the Lord wants to see in them.

About a week ago, I asked my husband why he thinks certain family members are still living in darkness. It seemed like my prayers haven’t been working. My husband’s response to my question was, “Maybe God has been trying to get them to change, but they refuse.”

His response to my question is the reason that my Monday morning Bible reading got to me so much.

Could it be that all of the negative things that have happened in my family’s lives, was God’s attempts to bring them back to Him?

If my heart breaks for them, how much more does God’s? Unfortunately, each person has to decide for themselves whether or not they will accept the full, abundant life that Jesus died to give. God is our Father, and He wants the very best for us. He wants to pour out so many blessings that it would be hard for us to contain. But often, we keep our heads down and hands closed. That’s no position to receive God’s blessings!

If you have lost loved ones, know that your prayers do matter! I often wonder how much worse my family might be, if it weren’t for me and other prayer warriors lifting them up on a daily basis. I try to stand on James 5:16 that says that the effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. This verse reminds me that my prayers are not in vain.

James 5:16

God is calling people out, day after day. He’s trying to get their attention.

Are you going through one thing after another? Does darkness have a tight grip around your neck?

Could it be that you have not given 100% of yourself to Him? Maybe you’ve been saved, but you have slipped up and done some things that you know aren’t right in God’s eyes. God is waiting on you! Ultimately, you are the only one who can save yourself. If you have someone in your life that you know has been praying for you, you should thank them. Their prayers could be what has kept you from sinking even further into the darkness.

If you are in need of a change, God is right there with you. He’s been doing things to get your attention, yet again, you turn away.

How much longer will you keep Him waiting? Make today the day that you you give it ALL to Him!

Whatever areas you’ve been struggling in, He’s there. He knows. And it is the Lord who will help you to move forward. All you have to do is get serious, repent, and ask Him for His help.

Be blessed my friends!
