Let Go Of Your Stuff to Draw Closer to The Lord
There is a major shift taking place in my life, and I sense that this same shift is happening to millions of people all across the globe. It’s a shift to let go of your stuff! Let go and see what has been holding you back and keeping you from the fullness of what God wants to do in your life.
I thought that I was a compassionate, loving person. But now it’s like an extra blindfold has been removed from my eyes; one that I didn’t even know existed. I thought that I saw the world through God’s eyes. But now I can’t drive down the street without my heart truly being broken, as I take my eyes off of myself and pay more attention to the world around me.
This all began when I heard the Lord whisper in my ear, “Get rid of stuff.” My response was pretty much like, “Okaaay…..WHY?” Why, why, why?” I started purging old clothing and things that we didn’t really need, but every single day, His voice would get louder and louder. Before I could even get my morning caffeine in, I would stumble across verses like Matthew 6:19-21 which says “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
I’m right smack in the middle of this journey. My questions moved from “Why?” to “What?” What do I get rid of? I would spend hours just in my closet, evaluating every single item. It was then that I realized that I am more attached to stuff than I thought I was. It shouldn’t be this hard. My friend is also trying to purge things, and we’d joke about lighting a match and starting completely over. Thinking about this, my heart sinks. Another veil is torn from my eyes as I think about how fortunate my family is. I think about all of the people on this planet who would love to have just a fraction of the stuff that fills up my home.
I’m still asking God what to get rid of, but the process is getting easier. Stuff means less and less to me. Now my goal is to get rid of something every single day except on Sundays. It can be a lot, or it can be just one thing. What matters most to me is that I’m making progress. I know that I have to stay on top of it though, because several months ago, the Lord gave me a word. ACCELERATION! I know that word was a sneak peak to what He’s up to in my life now. But guess what? [click_to_tweet tweet=”He can’t accelerate us into greater things, until we are obedient with what He’s already asked us to do.” quote=”He can’t accelerate us into greater things, until we are obedient with what He’s already asked us to do.”]
It’s so hard to stop asking Him why, when nothing makes sense to you. But He doesn’t want our questions. He wants our obedience.
I don’t know what God is up to, but I know that it’s BIG! I know that it’s GOOD! And I don’t want to miss out.
As you study the Bible, you will see many verses about what it truly means to be a follower of Jesus. Most of us are not ready for the truth. I know that I wasn’t. That’s why it’s taken me forty years to see verses like this in a whole new light:
Jesus said to him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” Matthew 19:21
A young ruler was asking Jesus what good thing he should do so that he would have eternal life. His reply was to sell everything he had and follow Him. The young man sorrowfully walked away because he had many possessions.
Matthew 19:21 applies to you too. If it’s hard for you to let go of your stuff, you have more than just a physical problem, you have a spiritual problem!
How will you respond? It’s time to let go of your stuff that is weighing you down and taking your focus off of Jesus! Let me suggest a book that (if you’re ready to truly follow Him) will be a life transforming book for you. It’s called “Radical” by David Platt. I read this book from start to finish in one week! I couldn’t put it down. In this book, he says so many things that I would tell you if I were writing a book on my desire to become one of the Lord’s true disciples.
