10 Benefits of Keto That I have Personally Experienced
When I tell people that I’m on the keto diet, I get odd glares from most of them. I think I can read their mind. I imagine them thinking, “Why on earth are you on a diet?” You see, I’m fairly small compared to most Americans, so people see no reason for me to be on a diet. Well, there lies the problem. Keto isn’t a diet for me, it’s a lifestyle. I want to share with you 10 benefits of keto that I have personally experienced to help you determine if keto could be right for you!
My keto journey began on December 8th, 2018. It was my last effort to get my blood pressure under control. All my life, I had perfect blood pressure…until last year. It suddenly spiked really high. You can read that story here. I tried everything! Eating extremely healthy, exercising multiple times a week, reducing stress, you name it, I tried it! My doctor was talking about putting me on blood pressure medication because I couldn’t get my bottom number out of the 90’s.
When most people hear the word keto, they immediately think of a diet that involves eating a ton of bacon, eggs, cheese, and processed meats. That’s the WRONG WAY to do keto, and I learned that the hard way when I first gave it a go a couple of years ago. This time, I decided to do it the right way, which means that I eat a lot of salad, chicken, veggies, and berries. I was able to do strict keto for 6 straight months. I then was on and off of the diet for a couple of months before realizing that I had to make this a lifestyle because I feel so amazing when I’m following the plan, and like complete trash when I’m not.
Here are 10 benefits of keto that I have personally experienced:
- Increased Energy
The first thing I noticed once I got past the “keto flu”, is that my energy levels skyrocketed. Thank you God! I needed that energy so badly. If you want to learn more about keto flu, you can do that here with this good article that I found. If you’re always tired and you can’t figure out why, then keto might just be a problem solver for you. You just have to be strong and push through the first couple of weeks or so, to give your body time to adjust.
- No more brain fog!
It is amazing how much clarity of thought happens after you’ve been on keto for awhile.
- You will lose weight!
I lost 20 pounds without exercising during those first 6 months. This was a very unexpected side effect for me, since I was doing keto for the sake of my blood pressure. It wasn’t until I lost the weight, that I realized I needed to lose those 20 pounds. I look back in pictures now and I just can’t believe that I was happy with how I looked. NOW I feel amazing and I wear the same size that I did before I had my first son, over 20 years ago. For some people, 20 pounds doesn’t seem like much, but for me, it made a world of difference. Here’s a picture of me one year ago (on the left) and a very recent photo on the right. You can see how my stomach bulged out before I began keto. I have gone from a size 8-10 to a size 4! The bulk of my weight was stomach fat, which is the most unhealthy place to carry the extra pounds.
- Decreases your appetite!
If you’re a person who has trouble with portion control, or just constantly feeling hungry, then you should definitely give keto a try. One of the reasons I love this lifestyle is that I can eat as much as I want to, it just has to be the right kinds of food. I never feel like I’m starving. In fact, when you reach a certain phase of this diet (for me it is about a month in), you no longer feel hungry all of the time. Some days I have to actually force myself to eat because I just don’t feel hungry.
- Better Sleep
Don’t let the first couple of weeks doing keto fool you! For me, sleep disturbance was also a part of the keto flu, but once I got past that stage, my sleep drastically improved. Maybe it’s the increase in energy that helps keep me going all day, that helps me sleep like a log at night.
- Better Skin
I have done other things that contributed to better skin, like getting off of birth control, but keto has definitely helped me look more hydrated and youthful. Someone even commented that they think I’m aging backwards. Yes!!! I also have less acne than I used to, which is just a natural side effect of cutting sugar out of your diet.
- Reduced Inflammation
Since I was a teenager, I have dealt with extremely tight muscles in my back. Massage therapists have always been amazed at the amount of pressure that I can handle. I have always ached so badly. Many times it has interfered with my daily life. Since being on keto, I still have aches, but it’s nothing compared to the way it was before.
- Healed my gut!
This is a HUGE positive change for me. In my young twenties, I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. Early on, I managed the pain with medications. Then I went years without meds because my body was in remission. However, when I had our last son, it came back with a vengeance. I tried going back on traditional meds, but the side effects were horrible. Then I started taking Align probiotics. Align really helped me out, but I would still sit on the couch with heat on my stomach several days each week, because the pain was unbearable. After about a month or so on keto, I noticed that the colitis pain was almost completely gone! As long as I stick to this way of life, I rarely have any pain. Sometimes I feel just a small twinge of pain. I’ll take an extra probiotic, drink more water, and voila! I feel amazing again!
- Boosts the Immune System
The only time I’ve gotten sick this year, is when I wasn’t on the keto diet. I truly believe that cutting all the sugar out of your diet, boosts your immune system. My boys have been sick a few times, and I’ve cuddled them to pieces, yet I never caught what they had. This is part of the reason that we are now working hard to cut the sugar out of their diets too. You have to set children up for a bright successful future, and that includes teaching them that a diet full of sugar isn’t good for their health. It’s an uphill battle in our culture, but they are worth it!
- Lower Blood Pressure
Last but certainly not least, I’m happy to report that yes, it did indeed lower my blood pressure! It honestly took almost 2 months for me to get that bottom number to budge, but once it did, my numbers were perfect! Not only did keto lower my blood pressure, but the last several times I’ve checked, the numbers were phenomenal.I can avoid taking medication because of keto, and I know of many people who were able to come off of their meds because of keto.
I am so grateful that I found this lifestyle! It has completely changed my life. Besides all of these amazing benefits, what keeps me going is just knowing that I’m doing all that I can to stay healthy for my family. If I, a major chocoholic can do this, anyone can! Perhaps in another post, I’ll share some of my favorite snacks and recipes. Let me know your thoughts about keto in the comments.
